Windows 8 - Metro - Screenshot2 by savouryspacemonkey Windows 8 - Metro - Screenshot2 by savouryspacemonkey
Progress. Some shell edits required obviously. Otherwise happy for any suggestions for obvious improvements. Idea would be to have at least six versions with different highlight colours (akin to the accent colours in WP7 and WP8). Orange shown previously, blue shown above.

omg I LOATHE Metro......I'd rather switch to an Apple product than endure this....yes, your Aero/Longhorn stylings & customizations were timelessly sublime compared to this sterile 2dimensional retro 7o's esque bleakness.......Microsoft, as with Facebook, seem to be labouring under the impressio were are ALL on smartphones....(we're not)so the sooner they knock off catering to that market, their Windows 8 sales, MIGHT tick up{but I'm doubtful}

I felt the same way about Metro for the longest time, but after actually using Win8 and WP8 for a while, the aesthetic grew on me. And actually, although pretty true to the visual aesthetic in some ways, this theme for Win8 actually loses much of the elegance because in most apps, including in Explorer, it is impossible to enforce the visual grid, which is a key part of real Metro apps. I also think perhaps I have failed to give the main window elements enough colour, but this is party by necessity because I don't want any visual breaks between content and chrome (to creat the illusion that things like explorer windows are relatively chromless) and including colour would create unusual visual breaks (the theme would not allow me simply to have a left hand or right hand strip of colour on the window unless it was limited to the frame which is pointless).

All I am really seeking to do is to make the transition from 'Metro' apps to the Win8 desktop apps a little less jarring, and I think that this is partially successful in achieving that. I also accept that some people just hate design to be so plain, and yet you can follow almost any medium and see that as it matures, this 'paring down' is inevitable: print and TV both show gradualy transistions away from multiple typefaces, trying to reproduce fake textures and effects through the use of graphics etc. to a much simpler style where the delivered content is the star and the rest fades away almost entirely.

thx so VERY much for your empathy & detailed point by point color response to my critique, Savoury......{you CLEARLY understand aesthetics & functionality so if ANYONE can whip up an appealing interface for this generation of o/s, it is YOU!}

It's the font rendering, which is Mactype. I prefer it.

I have checked on two machines. It's pin sharp. Try 'download' rather than zooming it.

Hmm indeed that did fix it, but it is also your fonts AA as you said, how you like using that setting is beyond me :P

Personal preference. The letterforms look more natural and so I find it more comfortable to read, but I know that lots of people hate it. That is not connected to the theme though ;)
